Weekend Stuff
It has surprised me to see how up on American politics most of the Canadians I've met are. Not only informed but delighted to talk about it at length and with a lot of insight. People are passionate but for the most part respectful. Frankly it's quite a different experience than talking politics in the US.
I got into a discussion this weekend with Das' mother about the pitfalls of democracy and what part the queen plays in maintaining a balance in British politics. Not something I ever thought I'd be called upon to chat about. I'm so glad I paid at least some attention when Das wanted to talk about it.
This weekend was cool, we spent it with his parents and I must say I was rather spoiled. There was apple juice which we never buy because Das doesn't like it, as well as a myriad of yummy snacks. I liked that things were less formal than they had been. Even though I'm sure I said many things that made them question my sanity and upbringing we had fun laughing and talking. In fact his mom and I stayed up past 2am on Saturday just chatting away. They kindly let me sleep in a bit sunday but we still made the 9am mass.
Das' dad's church has the funniest priest I've ever encountered. He makes bad jokes, and is generally silly but still manages to get his point across. One of the jokes Sunday was that Easter is the day we celebrate Jesus resurrection and if he sees his shadow we have 6 more weeks of spring. The other thing that had me giggling was since at Easter they sprinkle everyone, before actually doing it he talked about how baptism used to be full immersion and how he wished he was from those days so that he could hold people down until they think they were going to drown so that they have a better appreciation for the resurrection. I believe he called the way baptism is done today as wimpy. Mind you this did not stop him from taking aim at people when we went around the church, he got Das straight in the chest although I was only lightly misted. His dad said he thinks that is the most fun the priest has all year. I can believe it.
The dogs have made another conquest, we took them to a different boarding place this time and when we picked them up the staff was gushing about how cute and delightful they are. Nelly grew visibly from the time we dropped her off Friday morning to pick-up Sunday evening. It's a bit disconcerting to get back a bigger dog than the one you dropped off but this is the big growth stage. This morning her feet were bigger than yesterday. This picture is a comparison from the beginning of March to yesterday.
