A bra's tale

I have been wearing dresses a lot more this year and one of the things I realized is that especially with the fit and flare style I prefer they fit better when I wear a bra. I hate wearing bras but I also hate ill fitting clothes so I sucked it up and bought a couple of bras early in the spring which didn't seem quite right somehow but I figured it was b/c bras are evil torture devices.

I don't remember exactly when it occurred to me to look up info on bra sizing but man when I did it was like getting sucked into an alternate universe. So much information, so many websites! I spent hours jumping from site to site figuring out who had the most reliable info on sizing yourself and proper fitting. I was even able to find a site that had real life photos of women of different bra sizes in properly fitting bras which I looked at carefully so that I could get a good understanding of how different styles should look when they fit correctly.

Finally I was ready to find out what my real bra size was. The measurements were done (twice to be on the safe side) and the results that came in shocked me. I knew there was a good chance that I wasn't quite wearing the right size but damn I had not expected that I was 3 cup sizes and 2 band sizes off.  I figured I was one of those anomalies that measured funny but there was no way I would actually fit the size that consistently appeared on my computer screen. I used several different calculators US and European just to be sure and always got the same result, lol. It was with more than a bit of skepticism that I set out on my bra shopping adventure.

I started at a discount store since I assumed I was going to pick up a simple bra in a common size not the oddity they had tried to say I needed. I picked up a couple sure they would fit... I was wrong, very very wrong. So I tried a different one, then another. I finally admitted defeat and went to a different store with a more diverse selection. There I found not my original size but a sister size which fit perfectly. I was floored because although I had read story after story about such things I didn't really believe that it would apply to me. Seriously if I was that much off in my sizing then who on earth is wearing the proper size? And why isn't there more variety everywhere? Finding a bra that fits nicely should not take this much effort for grimey's sake. The good news is now I know what size I wear and I have a few cute & functional ones that go nicely under my dresses. All's well that ends well.
